Heat Pump Installers in the UK: How to Find, Check and Compare One for a Business Building
Updated 31 October 2026 · SEO Dons Editorial
Most pages that rank for heat pump installers are directories or advice for people replacing a domestic boiler. A business building is a different buyer: bigger plant, more stakeholders, a funding position that only partly overlaps with the domestic grant, and a bid that has to survive scrutiny from a finance director. This page sets out how to find installers in the UK, how to check them and how to compare them when the building is not a house.
Are installers for homes and for businesses the same?
Some firms do both, many do only one, and the skills differ. A domestic installer fits a single small unit to a house. A commercial installer, or the contractor leading a project with an M&E consultant, handles a cascaded plant set, a heat-loss survey against twelve months of half-hourly data, an emitter and flow-temperature strategy, a DNO supply check, BS 4142 acoustics and commissioning that proves delivered efficiency. Ask a domestic installer for references on comparable buildings before treating it as a commercial option.
Where to find heat pump installers on public registers
- MCS Find an Installer: shows a certification number and body, and lets you confirm certification for a specific technology such as air source or ground or water source heat pumps. Detail in how to check an MCS heat pump installer.
- Gas Safe Register: for any firm working on gas appliances, including a retained boiler in a hybrid design.
- NICEIC and NAPIT: registers for electrical contractors.
- F-Gas certification: a company handling refrigerant for others needs company certification from an approved body, and each engineer needs a personal qualification.
These registers are where the claims on a website can be tested. A logo is not a certificate.
Do I need an MCS installer for a business building?
For the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (England and Wales) can be used for a building used for a business, not only a home: it pays £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump that replaces a fossil-fuel heating system, within DESNZ capacity caps (45 kWth for a single system, 70 kWth for multiple systems, 300 kWth for shared ground loops), and hybrid systems are excluded. gov.uk tells applicants to contact suitable MCS certified installers, the installer applies for the grant and the value is taken off the price. Larger plant is outside the caps and is designed to CIBSE and BSRIA standards with BS EN 14511 and 14825 performance ratings, so ask which standards the design follows. The full picture is on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and MCS installer page.
How do I check an installer’s credentials?
Ask for the certification numbers, look each one up with the issuing body, and match the business name and address to the company on the quote. Then test the substance: who designs the system, what data the price is based on, which emitters need replacing, who carries the supply upgrade, and what the commissioning pack contains. The checklist turns this into 25 tick boxes you can print.
Why does one installer’s quote differ from another’s?
Because they assume different things: sizing from a survey or from floor area, a seasonal efficiency at a low flow temperature or at the old high one, emitter upgrades in or out, a supply upgrade owned by the client or the contractor, and commissioning and maintenance included or not. Put every bid on one sheet, add back the exclusions and compare. The method is in how to compare a commercial heat pump installation quote.
England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is open in England and Wales only, so a business in Scotland or Northern Ireland should not assume the same route exists. Registers such as MCS, Gas Safe and the F-Gas bodies work across the UK, which means the credential checks are the same wherever the building is, but the funding, planning and building-regulation position differs by nation. Ask any installer to state which nation’s rules its price assumes.
What to ask a domestic installer who offers to quote for a business
- What is the largest system you have installed, and can I speak to that client?
- Who will design a cascade or a system above the grant caps, and to which standards?
- How do you handle the DNO supply and any G99 paperwork?
- Who does the acoustic assessment, and who is responsible for a planning condition?
- What does your commissioning record contain beyond the standard form?
None of these questions is hostile. A firm with commercial experience will have standard answers, and a firm without it will reveal that quickly.
Funding and tax in one place
The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme has had no open application window since Phase 4 closed in November 2024, and gov.uk lists no further phase. The Industrial Energy Transformation Fund closed in July 2025 and gov.uk states that no successor fund is planned. The Green Heat Network Fund runs in application rounds: Round 12 closed on 25 September 2026, so check gov.uk for the next round. A heat pump is part of a space or water heating system, which HMRC lists as an integral feature (special-rate plant), and full expensing covers main-rate plant only. The Annual Investment Allowance gives 100% relief up to its limit (£1 million), and companies can then claim a 50% first-year allowance on special-rate plant, with a 6% writing-down allowance on the rest. Confirm the treatment with an accountant.
Next steps
Build a long list from the registers, score it using the method in how to shortlist heat pump installers, check the certificates, and only then compare prices. For the ground source version, see what to ask ground source heat pump installers.
Frequently asked questions
Are heat pump installers for homes and businesses the same?
Not always. Some firms do both, but a business building involves bigger plant, half-hourly data, DNO supply, acoustics and commissioning that proves efficiency. Ask for comparable references.
Do I need an MCS installer for a business building?
For the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, yes: gov.uk directs applicants to MCS certified installers, who apply on the owner’s behalf. The scheme can be used for a building used for a business within its capacity caps.
How do I check an installer’s credentials?
Look up the MCS entry, F-Gas certification, NICEIC or NAPIT and Gas Safe registration with the issuing bodies and match the legal entity to the quote.
Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme available for a business?
Sometimes: it can be used for a building used for a business in England and Wales, for a single system within the 45 kWth cap that replaces a fossil-fuel system. Hybrid systems are excluded.
Why does one installer’s quote differ from another’s?
Because bidders assume different sizing methods, flow temperatures, emitter works, supply upgrades and commissioning. Compare on one sheet after adding back the exclusions.
